Cette année, Ferrari fête ses 70 ans et Sebastian Vettel vient de donner un signe fort à Mercedes en remportant le premier Grand Prix de la saison. Cela faisait longtemps qu’une Ferrari ne s’était pas imposée en Formule 1. Les deux « Flèches d’Argent » d’Hamilton et Bottas complètent le podium.
En Australie, Vettel a décroché la 43ème victoire de sa carrière. Ce succès est historique car, depuis 2015 et le Grand Prix de Singapour, les cloches de l’église de Maranello n’avaient plus sonné.
La victoire s’est jouée lors de l’unique arrêt aux stand de l’épreuve. Hamilton, alors en tête, s’est arrêté au 18ème tour. Vettel et Ferrari ont quant à eux choisi d’effectuer leur arrêt au 24ème tour. Entre temps, le pilote Mercedes est revenu en piste à la 5ème place avant de se retrouver derrière Max Verstappen. Le vainqueur du jour en a profité pour ressortir des stands juste devant Verstappen et Hamilton.
Du côté des pilotes français, Romain Grosjean a abandonné après 15 tours seulement alors qu’il pointait à une 7ème place prometteuse. La fin de course a vu Esteban Ocon prendre le dessus sur Alonso lors d’une magnifique passe d’armes à trois avec également Hülkenberg (à voir en vidéo ci-dessous). Le pilote Force India termine 10ème et marque donc 1 point. Alonso n’a hélas pas vu le drapeau à damier car il a abandonné à 3 tours de l’arrivée.
