Neuf ans après son dernier départ de Grand Prix, Robert Kubica fera son retour en Formule 1. Il vient d’être titularisé chez Williams. Les efforts et l’état d’esprit du pilote polonais depuis son terrible accident de rallye en 2011 sont aujourd’hui récompensés.
Robert Kubica n’a jamais rien lâché, Pas moins de 18 opérations chirurgicales ont été nécessaires pour son rétablissement. Après son terrible accident, il revient en Sport Auto en rallye. En 2013, il remporte le titre pilote en WRC 2. Kubica s’est aussi essayé à l’Endurance en 2016 et au Renault Sport Trophy la même année pour son retour en circuit.
Puis, en juin 2017, Renault lui offre la possibilité de piloter une F1 lors d’une séance d’essais. Quelques mois plus tard, Williams lui propose de participer à différents tests, notamment à ceux de fin de saison sur le circuit de Yas Marina. Mais Kubica n’est pas au niveau, surtout face à Sirotkin. Ce dernier profitant également d’une importante manne financière de la part de SMP Racing. Kubica doit alors se contenter d’une place de pilote de réserve chez Williams.
Cette fois c’est la bonne. En 2019, Robert Kubica (33 ans) sera bien pilote titulaire aux côtés de George Russell (20 ans) au sein de la structure Williams F1 qui, rappelons-le, est la dernière du classement constructeurs de la saison 2018. Les 76 Grand prix disputés (12 podiums – 1 victoire au Canada en 2008 ) par le Polonais représentent déjà un sérieux gage en matière d’expérience.
Claire Williams, la Team Principal adjointe de l’équipe Williams F1 s’est exprimée sur le choix de titulariser Robert Kubica en 2019 :
« Nous avons tous été étonnés par ce qu’il a réussi à faire. Cela a apporté un grand crédit à sa force de caractère et à sa volonté de revenir en F1 Il a su devenir un membre établi et respecté au sein de l’équipe cette année en travaillant dans les coulisses. Son niveau de détermination est assez incroyable. Le nouveau rôle de Robert sera une étape importante pour nous dans notre objectif de remonter dans la hiérarchie. »
