Dimanche 25 Mars, la Formule 1 reprend ses droits à l’occasion du premier Grand Prix de la saison en Australie. A 4 jours du départ, Mercedes-AMG dévoile la voiture de sécurité 2018. La Mercedes-AMG GT R remplace l’AMG GT S.
La Supercar qui encadrera les monoplaces en piste en cas, par exemples, de départ sous régime de drapeau jaune ou d’accidents, est identique au modèle de série. Au-delà de ses attributs propres à sa fonction protectrice, à savoir la rampe de phares montée sur son toit, la Mercedes-AMG GT R Safety Car F1 bénéficie de l’AMG Track Pack : freins céramiques et arceaux de sécurité.
A l’intérieur, on remarque un iPad qui permet au copilote de la Safety Car (Richard Darker) de suivre la course. Darker est également constamment en contact radio avec la direction de course. Bernd Mayländer sera chargé de piloter la Mercedes-AMG GT R Safety Car F1 2018.
Cette Safety Car F1 est la plus puissante jamais utilisée. Rappelons que la Mercedes-AMG GT R développe 585 ch grâce à son V8 4.0 l biturbo. En termes de performances, elle abat le 0 à 100 km/h en 3,6 s et peut atteindre 318 km/h.
La Mercedes-AMG GT R Safety Car F1 2018 a été présentée aux côtés de la Medical Car. Il s’agit d’une Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Break forte de 510 ch (V8 4.0 l biturbo).
